LEGAL firm, Birkett Long, has a new intellectual property capability, appointing Jonathan Perlmutter as the Head of Intellectual Property (IP).
Jonathan has been working in intellectual property law for 13 years and came with an impressive existing portfolio of clients across all of the main IP disciplines, namely patent, trade mark, design and copyright. He is progressively introducing them to his team and the benefits offered by the wider firm.
His clients include some well-known brands. Jonathan works very closely with the retail chain CEX, for whom he administers the trade mark portfolio, as well as software and gaming giant Vivaro/BetConstruct, which is one of the leading producers of gaming technology in the world and trades under a variety of names. In patents, he has medical devices and engineering clients, a number of gadgets, as well as a variety of high tech, electronic and software clients, directly and via investors, such as VCs.
The firm is now able to service all technical disciplines worldwide using an extensive network of very bright patent attorneys. Jonathan has spent several years in the London technology scene and has a particular interest in start-ups and new businesses.
Jonathan is keen to build a strong department and make intellectual property a key aspect of Birkett Long’s offering. As a team, the IP department can offer a friendly and personal service – they have a lot of experience in making the fairly obscure provisions of law that govern this area clear and comprehensible. They also bring to the table a notably high degree of commercial awareness and are hopeful that they can put IP at the service of clients, such that they can understand it and subsequently gain full value from it.
Jonathan says: “There are already some good IP lawyers at Birkett Long and I have been brought in to expand, reinforce and coordinate their work, introducing complimentary services by employing patent and trade mark attorneys alongside solicitors for both contentious and non-contentious work. In doing this, we hope to provide a holistic service, which will mean that Birkett Long’s clients will not have to go elsewhere for their IP provision.
“I think the future is extremely bright for Essex, an enormous county at which one end is a part of London and at the other end virtually touches Europe. I have watched from afar with interest as the higher education provision of the county has expanded greatly and have been impressed with the development of the medical technology centres – first in Chelmsford, now in Harlow and then, I believe, in Southend. There is a great deal of exciting work being done here, and I think a real need for an integrated commercial IP service to meet it.”
Birkett Long has offices in Chelmsford, Colchester, Basildon and London. With 25 partners, it provides a wide range of legal and independent financial services for business including corporate and commercial advice, dispute resolution, education, insolvency, intellectual property and employment and for individuals: wills and conveyancing, family law, independent financial advice, dispute resolution and accident and negligence claims.
